The following is the Local Committee's Report :

"The School was originally a Vernacular one, the inhabitants of Pooree having subscribed to pay an extra Teacher to enable those boys who wished to learn English, Geography, History and Arithmetic.

"The School was at first under the management of the present Third Master, until the First and Second Masters joined, which they did soon after their appointment.

"The only change which has taken place in the establishment, is the appointment of Babu DenoChanges. nath Mookerjee, at the recommendation of the Local Committee, as Third Master, in the room of the original appointment by the Council of Education.

"The number of pupils amount to 82. Four of these on account of their belonging to the original Vernacular School have been allowed to remain at the School, though learning nothing but Oorya.

"The attendance of the School has been tolerably good. The School was visited in December last by Mr. Kerr, the Principal of the Hooghly College, who examined all the different classes.

"The General Examination commenced on the 10th April, and was continued till the 15th. Mr. E. B. Thring examined the First Class in Literature, History and Geography, and the Second in Literature and Geography; Mr. H. R. Clarke examined the first three classes in Mathematics; Babu Shamachurn Sircar the first two Classes in Grammar, and the third and fourth in Reading and Explanation; and Babu Gourbullub Ghose, conducted the examination in the Vernacular. The following are their remarks :

The First Class, consisting of six boys, their average age 15. Mr. Thring observes

"I am well satisfied with this class. They read pretty fairly and understand what they read. Their translations were tolerably good."

Mr. Clarke remarks, 66 I am very much pleased with the way in which the first five

Babu Shamachurn states-"The boys of the First Class have, with the exception of one or two, done great credit to themselves in their answers to the questions in Grammar."

The Second Class consists of 18 boys, of whom one was absent at the time of the examination. Their average age ranges from 10 to 16. Mr. Thring says-" Many boys of the Second Class read well and

distinctly, the senior boys explain very fairly, not so the junior. In Geography, they only commenced learning in February last, consequently do not know much as yet."

Mr. Clarke observes-"I examined the Second Class in Arithmetic, and am, on the whole, very much satisfied with their progress in this subject; I should recommend the first boy for the prize." Babu Shama Churn states-" In Grammar this class passed a satisfactory examination with the exception of a few boys."

The Third Class consists of 15 boys, their ages varying from 10 to 17.

Mr. Clarke says-I think they have done very well in Arithmetic for the short time they have studied the subject."

Many boys of this class are too big and stupid, and the Master has to work upon very bad materials. They should, however, have another year for trial.

Fourth Class.-This class consists of 35

Babu Shamachurn observes-"The first Section of this class

have passed a most

creditable examination. This is a very nice class, the boys are sharp and have made as much progress as can be expected from them.”

The boys of the second Section know the meaning of words, but many of them are deficient in Spelling.

From the number of marks given by the Vernacular Examiner, it appears that the result of the examination in the Vernacular is satisfactory.

The following boys have been recommended for Prizes :—
