THE present Report brings down the proceedings of the Council of Education to 27th January 1855, and extends over a period of two years and three months.

The two principal events which engaged the attention of the Council during this time were the proceedings with reference to the Presidency College and the plan of the extension of Vernacular Education. The correspondence on the former subject has been printed in the XIVth. number of the Selections of the Bengal Government, and that on the latter is still with Government, and consequently cannot be introduced into the present Report.

The Council recorded the following minutes on the removal of the Hon'ble J. R. Colvin, Dr. Changes in the Council. Forsyth, the Hon'ble F. J. Halliday,

Dr. Mouat, and Baboo Russomoy Dutt :-

The Hon'ble J. R. Colvin and Dr. Forsyth,

Resolutions dated 29th October 1853.

"The Council regret the loss of the very valuable and active services of Members of their body, of the Hon'ble J. R. Colvin, and Senior Surgeon J. Forsyth.

"The long connection of Mr. Colvin with Education in Bengal, as a Member, some years since, of the late General Committee of Public Instruction and recently of the Council of Education; the deep and active interest exhibited by him in all matters connected with the duties of those bodies; his eminent acquirements as an Oriental Scholar and an intimate acquaintance with the existing state of all classes and sects of the Natives of Bengal, imparted the highest value to his counsels

"The regret felt by the Council at the loss of so skilled and efficient a colleague is more than compensated by the knowledge that the elevation of Mr. Colvin to a far loftier sphere of action and usefulness has increased the opportunities at his command of advancing the cause and progress of Education.

"In Mr. Forsyth, the Council lose an esteemed co-adjutor who has for several years aided them with his valuable advice and assistance in the government of the Medical College.
