PREFACE.

THIS book has been prepared for two classes of readers, the officers who are charged with the service of civil and criminal processes, and the attorneys who have occasion to employ such officers.

Those who have much to do with court proceedings must realize the importance which attaches to the acts of the officers in the service of process, not only that they shall be correctly performed, but that the proper return and record thereof shall be made. There seems to be a demand for a book which, while discussing the law, also gives clear and explicit directions to the officers as to the manner in which their more important duties shall be performed. "New England Sheriff" aimed to do this to a certain extent, but the many changes in the laws render it of little value at the present time; many of its forms are not adapted to the present condition of the and it does not contain much in the nature of
