RAPID TRANSIT ROUTES

The following is a statement of progress in the laying out and validation of rapid transit routes during the calendar year 1917, being supplementary to Appendix A of the Annual Report of the Public Service Commission for the First District for the year ending December 31, 1909, entitled "History and Description of Rapid Transit Routes in New York City"; Appendix E of the Annual Report of the Public Service Commission for the First District for the year ending December 31, 1911, entitled, "A Statement of Progress in the Laying Out and Validation of Rapid Transit Routes from January 1, 1910, to December 31, 1911" and Appendix D of the Annual Reports of the Public Service Commission for the First District for the years 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915 and 1916, respectively, entitled, "Rapid Transit Routes."

During the year 1917, the Commission adopted one additional rapid transit route, described as the "Ashland Place Connection " (Route No. 65), and modifications of two rapid transit routes, known as the "Flushing Route" (Route No. 52) and "Southern Boulevard and Whitlock Avenue Route" (Route No. 22).

The purpose of the adoption of the "Ashland Place Connection" (Route No. 65) was to permit of the construction of an incline connection between the Fulton Street Elevated structure and the Fourth Avenue subway. This route was adopted by the Commission on February 16, 1917, and approved by the Board of Estimate and Apportionment on June 15, 1917, and by the Mayor on June 27, 1917.

The construction of the Ashland Place Connection (Route No. 65) required a modification of Contract No. 4, executed on March 19, 1913, between The City of New York, by the Public Service Commission for the First District, and the New York Municipal Railway Corporation, as well as a modification of the certificate for additional tracks granted by the Commission on the
