ACADEMICAL AND HISTORICAL.
FRANCIS WILLIAM NEWMAN
Emeritus Professor of University College, London.
Requests from time to time have been made for a selection from my anonymous writings: in consequence, a volume was planned and arranged. But my Publisher, on learning how much material, hitherto unprinted, lay in my drawers, requested me to furnish it to him in preference. Nor is it all yet exhausted. On the reception given to this volume it must depend, whether others shall follow. Although the Lectures have received recent correction, I have carefully avoided to alter any allusions which indicate the year or place of original delivery. The last article appeared in the National Beview, an unfortunately short-lived quarterly. The Lecture on Elocution was delivered at a Ladies' College.
