PREFACE.

The selection, the printing, and the recitation of the following pieces were sources of very great interest to those engaged in the work. The fugitive pamphlets of successive years have now been collected into a volume, in the hope that they may recal pleasant recollections to those who assisted in their first production, and who may wish to possess on the shelves of their Libraries a more permanent record of their own labours, and those of their immediate predecessors and successors.

In the selection of these passages for recitation, care was taken, in the first place, to choose such as were sufficiently short and simple for very young reciters, scarcely any of whom were yet in their teens. In the next place it was not considered worth while to print many of the common and well-known passages of classical authors, which

occur in all ordinary school collections, and which would consequently be in everyone's hands. These conditions

rendered it a labor of considerable difficulty to collect from various sources our yearly supply, and we have to thank many kind friends for timely contributions in different languages. Some of these contributions very great excellence, and are not to be met with elsewhere in print. They consequently add greatly to the value of this volume.

As a limited and uncertain number of these annual Recitations was originally printed, some of the earlier sets have had to be re-printed; but care has been taken to re-produce the order and arrangement, and to attach the original "Typofecit" with its proper initials. Should this volume fall into critical hands, it is hoped that errors of typography may be kindly excused in consideration of the youth and inexperience of the Printers.
