VOLUME FIRST OF THE

ROMANCE OF THE PEERAGE

OR, CURIOSITIES OF FAMILY HISTORY.

BY GEORGE LILLIE CRAIK.

"There is no one of our ennobled families the history of which can be long pursued without conducting us over the whole field of English society. All of them have been mixed up in every possible way with every rank of the people. In some instances, the oldest and highest of them have gradually sunk, or been suddenly thrown down, to the humblest social position; in other cases, the stream of descent has flowed for ages in the obscurest channel, and the heir to a coronet has been found in the descendant of generations of peasants or mechanics."

EXTRACT FROM PREFACE. "There is nothing in this book to mislead the youthful student. No splendid fiction, no wish to confound time, or place, or person. We have a painstaking narrative compiled from known materials, and from the results of original, and at times successful, research. The student of English History will rise from the perusal of Mr. Craik's first volume pleased with the care exhibited, the quiet sifting of facts and circumstances to be observed at every turn, and the new materials which the author's industry has brought to light."-ATHENEUM.

We believe there are few literary men in England who are so well acquainted with this subject as the present author."-JERROLD'S NEWSPAPER.

Author of Mrs. Perkins's Ball," "The Snob Papers," &c,, &c.)

"In forming our general estimate of this writer, we wish it to be understood as referring principally, if not exclusively, to Vanity Fair,' so immeasurably superior in our opinion is this to every other known production of his pen. The great charm of this work is its entire freedom from mannerism and affectation, both in style and sentiment, the confiding frankness with which the reader is addressed, the thorough-bred carelessness with which the author permits the thoughts and feelings suggested by the situations to flow in their natural channel, as if conscious that nothing mean or unworthy could fall from him. In a word, the book is the work of a gentlemanone touch of nature makes the whole world kin, and here are touches of nature by the dozen.” EDINBURGH REVIEW.

BRITISH LYING-IN HOSPITAL,

BROWNLOW STREET, LONG ACRE.

UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF

Her MAJESTY the QUEEN DOWAGER.

ESTABLISHED 1794.

In consequence of the dilapidated state of the buildings of the late Hospital, the Governors have been compelled to take measures for the erection of a new Hospital, which is now being built in Endell Street, Long Aere, in which it is intended to have increased accommodation for a larger number of patients who are the wives or widows of distressed housekeepers, tradesmen, &c.

The Governors venture to urge their appeal to the benevolence of the public by the pressing necessity arising from the large outlay of nearly £6000. They are also emboldened by a reference to the great good accomplished in the late Hospital, in which upwards of 40,000 females have been relieved, and that at a time of all others the most interesting and necessitous to them and their families.

Donations and subscriptions will be most thankfully received by the Treasurers, Messrs. Hoare, Fleet Street; by the Medical Officers (all of whom act gratuitously)-namely, Dr. Henry Davies, 18, Saville Row; Dr. Robert Lee, 4, Saville Row; B. Brooks, Esq. 37, Bedford Street, Covent Garden; and John Clarke Esq. 3, Clifford Street, Bond Street. Also by Henry Fuller, Esq. 112, Piccadilly; T. A. Stone, Esq. 16, Curzon Street, May Fair; and the Secretary, at the Office of the Hospital, Brownlow Street, Long Acre.

A Donation of £21 constitutes the donor a Life Governor of the Hospital,
