A. D. 59.

1 COR. VII. 22-30.

a For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's "freeman: b likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.

• Gr. made free.

a See on John viii. ver. 32. clause 2. b See on Rom. i. ver. 1. clause 2.

VER. 23.

a Ye are bought with a price; b be not short: it remaineth, that both they that ye the servants of men. have wives be as though they had none ;

See on chap. vi. ver. 20. clause 1. b Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called, ver. 20.

VER. 24.

a Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not, Job xiv. 1, 2.

Εκαστος ἐν ᾧ ἐκλήθη, ἀδελφοὶ, ἐν τού- Behold, thou hast made my days as an

a Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.

a See on ver. 20.

VER. 25.

Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.

a See on Rom. i. ver, 5. clause 1. VER. 26.

[ocr errors]

I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be.

A. D. 59.

a But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.

a See on ver. 2.

VER. 29.

But this I say, brethren, the time is

*Or, necessity.

VER. 27.

Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.

VER. 28.

hand-breadth, and mine age is as no-
thing before thee: verily every man
at his best state is altogether vanity.
Selah, Psal. xxxix. 5. Thou carriest
them away as with a flood; they are
as a sleep in the morning they are
like grass which groweth up. In the
morning it fourisbeth, and groweth
up; in the evening it is cut down,
and withereth. For we are consumed

the light of thy countenance. For all
our days are passed away in thy
wrath; we spend our years as a tale

told, xc. 5-9. As for man, his days are as grass ; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth: For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone ; and the place thereof shall know it no more, ciii. 15, 16. For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun? Eccl. vi. 12. The

night is far spent, the day is at hand : let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light, Rom. xiii. 12. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer, 1 Pet. iv. 7.

VER. 30.

VER. 33.

|

So then he that giveth her in marΟ δὲ γαμήσας μεριμνᾶ τὰ τοῦ κόσ- riage dorth well; but he that giveth her μου, πῶς ἀξέσει τῇ γυναικί. not in marriage doeth better.

But he that is married, careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.

VER. 34.

There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cureth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

VER. 55.

And this I speak for your own proft; not that I may cast a snare upon you,

A. D. 59.

but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.

VER. 36.

But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.

VER. 37.

Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.

VER. 58.

a The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth, but if her hus band be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

a See on Matt. v. ver. 32. clause 2. b Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infdel? 2 Cor. vi. 14, 15.

VER. 40.

A. D. 59.

For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

VER. 6.

a But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ,

A. D. 59.

1 COR. VII. 40.-VIII. 1–8.

But she is happier if she so abide, after | ἐν οὐρανῷ, εἴτε ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· (ὥσπερ εἰσι my judgment : and I think also that I | θεοὶ πολλοὶ, καὶ κύριοι πολλοί.) have the Spirit of God.

CHAP. VIII.-VER. 1.

Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

VER. 2.

Εἰ δέ τις δοκεῖ εἰδέναι τι, οὐδέπω οὐδὲν by whom are all things, and we * by ἔγνωκε καθὼς δεῖ γνώναι·

And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

VER. 3.

a But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

a For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish, Psal. i. 6. The Lo RD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble ; and he knoweth them that trust in him, Nah. i. 7. And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity, Matt. vii. 23.

I am

the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine, John X. 14. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity, 2 Tim. ii. 19.

VER. 4.

As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, b and that there is none other God but one.

a I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean, Rom. xiv. 14. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin, 23.

VER. 8.

And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus ; and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, 1 am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what wilt thou have me. to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do, Acts ix. 3-6.

a Do we begin again to commend ourselves ? or need we, as some others,

epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you? Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men : Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart, 2 Cor. iii. 13.
