2 Arm me with jealous care,
As in thy sight to live;
And O thy servant, Lord, prepare,
A strict account to give!
Help me to watch and pray,
And on thyself rely;

Assured, if I my trust betray,
I shall for ever die.

Desiring Growth in Grace. (C. M.)

637. 1 TRY

RY us, O God, and search the ground
Of ev'ry sinful heart:

Whate'er of sin in us is found,

O bid it all depart.

2 Help us to help each other, Lord,
Each other's cross to bear :
Let each his friendly aid afford,
And feel his brother's care.

3 Help us to build each other up,
Our little stock improve;

Increase our faith, confirm our hope,
And perfect us in love.

4 Then, when the mighty work is wrought, Receive thy ready bride;

Give us in heav'n a happy lot,

With all the sanctify'd.

638. The universal Law of Equity. Matt. viii. 12.

1

BLESSE

(L. M.)

LESSED Redeemer, how divine,
How righteous is this rule of thine,

"To do to all men just the same,
"As we expect or wish from them.”

2 This golden lesson, short and plain,
Gives not the mind nor mem'ry pain;
And every conscience must
This universal law of love.

approve

3 How blest would every nation be,
Thus rul'd by love and equity!
All would be friends, without a foe,
And form a paradise below.

4 Jesus, forgive us, that we keep
Thy sacred law of love asleep;
No more let envy, wrath, and pride,
But thy blest maxims be our guide.

Divine Protection. (L. M.)

P to the hills I lift mine eyes, Th' eternal hills beyond the skies; Thence all her help my soul derives; There my almighty refuge lives.

2 He lives, the everlasting God,

That built the world, that spread the flood,
The heav'ns with all their hosts he made,
And the dark regions of the dead.

3 He guides our feet, he guards our way;
His morning smiles bless all the day;
He spreads the evening veil, and keeps
The silent hours while Israel sleeps.

4 Israel, a name divinely blest,
May rise secure, securely rest;
Thy holy Guardian's wakeful eyes,
Admit no slumber nor surprise.

5 No sun shall smite thy head by day,
Nor the pale moon, with sickly ray,
Shall blast thy couch; nor baleful star
Darts his malignant fire so far.

6 Should earth and hell with malice burn,
Still thou shalt go, and still return,
Safe in the Lord; his heav'nly care
Defends thy life from every snare.
7 On thee foul spirits have no power;
And in thy last departing hour,
Angels, that trace the airy road,
Shall bear thee homeward to thy God.

640. Preservation by Day and Night. (L.M.)

O heav'n I lift my waiting eyes,

1 To

There all my hopes are laid:

The Lord, that built the earth and skies,
Is my perpetual aid.

2 Their feet shall never slide to fall,
Whom he designs to keep;
His ear attends the softest call,
His eyes can never sleep.

3 He will sustain our weakest powers,
With his almighty arm,

And watch our most unguarded hours,
Against surprising harm.

4 Israel, rejoice, and rest secure,
Thy keeper is the Lord;

His wakeful eyes employ his power
For thine eternal guard.

Nor scorching sun, nor sickly moon,
Shall have his leave to smite;
He shields thy head from burning noon,
From blasting damps at night.

He guards thy soul, he keeps thy breath,
Where thickest dangers come;
Go and return, secure from death,
Till God commands thee home.

1. Flying to Christ for Refuge. (P. M.) JESUS, lover of my soul,

Let me to thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high!
Hide me, O my Saviour, hide,
Till the storm of life is past!
Safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last

Other refuge have I none;
Hangs my helpless soul on thee!
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me!
All my trust on thee is stay'd,
All my help from thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head,
With the shadow of thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want;
More than all in thee I find :
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick, and lead the blind:

Just and holy is thy name,—
I am all unrighteousness;
Vile and full of sin I am,
Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with thee is found,
Grace to pardon all my sin :
Let the healing streams abound;
Make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art,
Freely let me take of thee;
Spring thou up within my heart,
Rise to all eternity!

An Hiding Place. (L.M.)

AIL, sov'reign grace, that first began
The scheme to rescue fallen man!
Hail, matchless, free, eternal grace,
That gave my soul an hiding place.

2 Should storms of seven-fold thunder roll,
And shake the globe from pole to pole;
No flaming bolt could daunt my face,
For Jesus is my hiding place.

On him almighty vengeance fell,
That must have sunk a world to hell;
He bore it for his chosen race,
And thus became their hiding place.

4 A few more rolling suns at most,
Will land me on fair Canaan's coast,
Where I shall sing the songs of grace,
And see my glorious hiding place.
