True pleasures abound in the rapturous sound:
And whoever hath found it, hath paradise found;
My Jesus to know, and feel his blood flow,
Tis life everlasting, 'tis heaven below!

Yet onward I haste, to the heavenly feast;
That, that is the fulness; but this is the taste:
And this I shall prove, till with joy I remove,
To the heaven of heavens in Jesus's love.]
8. Sincerity. Psalm cxxxix. 23, 24. (C. M.)

L

YOD is a Spirit, just and wise,

GOD

He sees our inmost mind;

In vain to heav'n we raise our cries,
And leave our souls behind.

Nothing but truth before his throne,
With honour can appear;
The painted hypocrites are known,
Through the disguise they wear.
3 Their lifted eyes salute the skies,
Their bending knees the ground;
But God abhors the sacrifice,

Where not the heart is found.

Lord, search my thoughts, and try my ways,
And make my soul sincere ;
Then shall I stand before thy face,
And find acceptance there.

The Christian Race. Isa. xl. 28-31.

(L. M.)

WAKE, our souls, away, our fears,

Let every trembling thought be gone;

wake, and run the heav'nly race, nd put a cheerful courage on.

2 True, 'tis a strait and thorny road,
And mortal spirits tire and faint;
But they forget the mighty God,
That feeds the strength of every saint,

3 Thee, mighty God, whose matchless power Is ever new and ever young,

And firm endures while endless years,
Their everlasting circles run.

4 From thee, the overflowing spring,
Our souls shall drink a fresh supply,
While such as trust their native strength,
Shall melt away, and droop, and die.

5

Swift as an eagle cuts the air,

We'll mount aloft to thine abode,
On wings of love our souls shall fly,
Nor tire amidst the heav'nly road.

620. I will trust, and not be afraid. Isa. xii. 2.

(P.M.)

BEG EGONE, unbelief, my Saviour is near, And, for my relief, will surely appear; By prayer let me wrestle, and he will perform; With Christ in the vessel, I smile at the storm.

2 Though dark be my way, since he is my guide,
"Tis mine to obey, 'tis his to provide:
Tho' cisterns are broken, and creatures all fail,
The word he hath spoken shall surely prevail.

3 His love in time past forbids me to think
He'll leave me at last in trouble to sink;
Each sweet Ebenezer, I have in review,
Confirms his good pleasure to help me quite thro

Why should I complain of want and distress, emptation or pain? he told me no less:

The heirs of salvation, I know from his word, 'hrough much tribulation must follow their Lord. Since all that I meet shall work for my good, he bitter is sweet, the med'cine is food, hough painful at present, 'twill cease before long, And then, O how pleasant the conqueror's song!

321.

The Lord will provide. (P.M.)

HO' troubles assail, and dangers affright,
Tho' friends should all fail, and foes all unite;
Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide,
The scripture assures us, the Lord will provide.
2 The birds without barn or store-house are fed,
From them let us learn, to trust for our bread :
His saints, what is fitting, shall ne'er be deny'd,
So long as 'tis written, the Lord will provide.
3 His call we obey, like Abra'm of old,
Not knowing our way, but faith makes us bold;
For tho' we are strangers, we have a good guide,
And trust in all dangers, the Lord will provide.

4 No strength of our own, or goodness we claim,
Yet since we have known the Saviour's great name;
In this our strong tower for safety we hide,
The Lord is our power, the Lord will provide.

5 When life sinks apace, and death is in view,
This word of his grace shall comfort us thro':
No fearing or doubting, with Christ on our side,
We hope to die shouting, the Lord will provide.

622. Trust in God, in every Condition. (S.M.)

YOUR harps, ye trembling saints,

Down from the willows take:

Loud to the praise of love divine,
Bid ev'ry string awake.

Though in a foreign land,
We are not far from home,
And nearer to our house above,
We ev'ry moment come.

3 His grace will to the end,
Stronger and brighter shine;

4

Nor present things, nor things to come,
Shall quench the spark divine.

When we in darkness walk,
Nor feel the heav'nly flame;
Then is the time to trust our God,
And rest upon his name.

5 Soon shall our doubts and fears,
Subside at his controul;

His loving-kindness shall break through
The midnight of the soul.

[blocks in formation]

That stays himself on thee!

Who waits for thy salvation, Lord,
Shall thy salvation see.

623.

Confidence in God. (C. M.)

THE Lord of glory is my light,
And my salvation too;

God is my strength, nor will I fear
What all my foes can do.

2 One privilege my heart desires;
O grant me an abode

Among the churches of thy saints,
The temples of my God!

3 There shall I offer my requests,
And see thy beauty still,
Shall hear thy messages of love,
And there inquire thy will.

4 When troubles rise, and storms appear,
There may his children hide;
God has a strong pavilion, where
He makes my soul abide.

5 Now shall my head be lifted high
Above my foes around,

And songs of joy and victory,
Within thy temple sound.

The Christian Warfare. (L. M.)

STAND

TAND up, my soul, shake off thy fears,
And gird the gospel armour on;

March to the gates of endless joy,
Where thy great Captain Saviour's gone.
Hell and thy sins resist thy course,
But hell and sin are vanquish'd foes;
Thy Jesus nail'd them to the cross,
And sung the triumph when he rose.

3 What though the prince of darkness rage,
And waste the fury of his spite,
Eternal chains confine him down
To fiery deeps, and endless night.
