9" Shine into my distressed soul,
"Let thy compassion save;
"And though my flesh sink down to death,
"Redeem it from the grave.

10" I shall arise to praise thy name,
"Shall reign in worlds unknown;
"And thy salvation, O my God,
"Shall seat me on thy throne."

79. Christ's Passion, and Sinners Salvation. (L. M.)

EEP in our hearts let us record

1DE

The deeper sorrows of our Lord;
Behold! the rising billows roll,

To overwhelm his holy soul.

2 In long complaints he spends his breath,
While hosts of hell, and pow'rs of death,
And all the sons of malice join,
To execute their curst design.
3 Yet, gracious God, thy pow'r and love
Has made the curse a blessing prove;
Those dreadful suff'rings of thy Son,
Aton'd for sins which we had done.

4 The pangs of our expiring Lord,
The honours of thy law restor'd;
His sorrows made thy justice known,
And paid for follies not his own.
5 0! for his sake, our guilt forgive,
And let the mourning sinner live;
The Lord will hear us, in his name,
Nor shall our hope be turn'd to shame.

80. The Lord's Supper instituted. 1 Cor. xi. 23, &

1 'TWA

(L. M.)

WAS on that dark, that doleful night, When pow'rs of earth and hell arose Against the Son of God's delight,

And friends betray'd him to his foes.

2 Before the mournful scene began,

He took the bread, and bless'd, and brake; What love thro' all his actions ran ! What wond'rous words of grace he spake ! 3"This is my body, broke for sin; "Receive and eat the living food:" Then took the cup, and bless'd the wine; ""Tis the new cov'nant in my blood."

4 For us, his flesh with nails was torn,
He bore the scourge, he felt the thorn,
And justice pour'd upon his head
Its heavy veng'ance in our stead.

5 For us, his vital blood was spilt,
To buy the pardon of our guilt;
When for black crimes of largest size
He gave his soul a sacrifice.

6 "Do this, (he cry'd,) 'till time shall end,
"In mem❜ry of your dying Friend;
"Meet at my table, and record
"The love of your departed Lord."

7 Jesus! thy feast we celebrate,
We show thy death, we sing thy name,
"Till thou return, and we shall eat
The marriage-supper of the Lamb.

81. Communion with Christ, and with Saints.

1 Cor. x. 16, 17. (S. M.) ESUS invites his saints

JESUS

To meet around his board;
Here pardon'd rebels sit and hold
Communion with their Lord.

For food he gives his flesh;
He bids us drink his blood;
Amazing favour, matchless grace
Of our descending God!

This holy bread and wine
Maintains our fainting breath,

By union with our living Lord,
And int'rest in his death.

Our heav'nly Father calls

Christ and his members one;
We the young children of his love,
And he the first-born Son,

5 We are but sev'ral parts

Of the same broken bread;
One body hath its sev'ral limbs,
But Jesus is the head.

6 Let all our pow'rs be join'd,
His glorious name to raise ;
Pleasure and love fill ev'ry mind,
And ev'ry voice be praise.

82. Christ's Dying Love; or, our Pardon bought at

a dear Price. (C. M.)

HOW condescending and how kind

Was God's eternal Son!

Our mis'ry reach'd his heav'nly mind,
And pity brought him down.

2 When justice, by our sins provok'd, Drew forth its dreadful sword, He gave his soul up to the stroke, Without a murm'ring word.

3 He sunk beneath our heavy woes,
To raise us to his throne;

There's ne'er a gift his hand bestows,
But cost his heart a groan.

4 This was compassion like a God,
That when the Saviour knew
The price of pardon was his blood,
His pity ne'er withdrew.

Now, tho' he reigns exalted high,
His love is still as great;
Well he remembers Calvary,

Nor lets his saints forget.

6 Here we behold his bowels roll,
As kind as when he dy'd;
And see the sorrows of his soul
Bleed thro' his wounded side.

7 Here we receive repeated seals
Of Jesus' dying love;

Hard is the heart that never feels
One soft affection move.

8 Here let our hearts begin to melt,
While we his death record,

And, with our joy for pardon'd guilt,
Mourn that we pierc'd the Lord.

83. Crucifixion to the World, by the Cross of Christ. Gal. vi. 4. (L. M.)

I

WHEN

HEN I survey the wond'rous cross,
On which the Prince of Glory dy'd,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

3 See from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4 His dying crimson, like a robe,
Spreads o'er his body on the tree;
Then am I dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me.

5 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

The Spirit, the Water, and the Blood,
1 John v. 6. (S. M.)

L

ET all our tongues be one,
To praise our God on high,
Who from his bosom sent his Son,
To fetch us strangers nigh.
