And also so as to connect by tunnel or otherwise Mott avenue on the north side with Lexington avenue on the south side of Harlem river; also commencing on Leggett avenue (as proposed and laid out by the department of public parks) at its intersection with the Southern boulevard, and running thence easterly with double tracks along said proposed Leggett avenue to Wenman avenue (as proposed and laid out by the department of public parks) and along said proposed Wenman avenue to Hunt's Point road, and along Hunt's Point road to its easterly terminus at or near Spofford point. And also commencing on said proposed Wenman avenue at its intersection with the Southern boulevard at 141st street, thence running with double tracks easterly along said proposed Wenman avenue to its intersection with said proposed Leggett avenue; also commencing on Kingsbridge road, at or near the Fordham station of the Harlem railroad, and running thence with double tracks westerly over, through and along the line of the said Kingsbridge road, to the Harlem river at or near Kingsbridge; also commencing on Brook avenue, at its intersection with Washington avenue, running thence westerly on Elton avenue, to the intersection of 161st street, thence westerly over, through and along 161st street (sometime called Union street and sometime called Cedar street) to its junction with Jerome (or Central) avenue; also commencing on Locust avenue, at its intersection with the Boston Post road; thence running with double tracks westerly over, through, and along said Locust avenue to and into Tremont avenue; thence along Tremont avenue or Morris street to and into 177th (or Waverly) street; thence along said 177th (or Waverly) street, to Jerome (or Central) avenue; also commencing on 149st street, at Mott avenue, and running thence with double tracks easterly over, through and along 149th street (sometime called Benson street and sometime called Westchester street) to the Southern boulevard, and thence southerly along 149th street to the terminus thereof.

Special franchise. February 2, 1886, the Company, by its vicepresident and secretary, petitioned the Board of Aldermen for a franchise to construct a double track street railway along the streets as set forth in the charter. The petition was referred to the committee on railroads. No action seems to have been taken upon the application.

Construction. No record of any construction. has probably forfeited its corporate existence.

Special franchises. February 2, 1886, the Company petitioned the Board of Aldermen for a franchise covering substantially the route as set forth in its charter. In the application for the franchise it stated that the railroad to be constructed was to be operated by horse power or some power other than locomotive steam power. This petition was referred to the committee on railroads. The franchise was never granted.

Construction. No record of any construction. The Company has probably forfeited its corporate existence.

507 New York Tunnel Company

Incorporation. Originally incorporated as "The New York and Brooklyn Iron Tubular Tunnel Company" (no. 405), May 2, 1868; name of that company changed to this Company by chapter 253, laws of 1869.

By and

Extension of time with which to complete construction. special acts of the legislature, chapter 419, laws of 1873, 354, laws of 1879, the Company was granted two and five years' extension of time, respectively, within which to complete the construction of its tunnel.

Construction. No record of any construction. The Company has probably forfeited its corporate existence.

June 28, 1880; General Railroad Law of 1850, and amendatory acts, especially "an act to provide for excavating and tunneling and bridging for transportation purposes within villages and cities in this state passed June 25, 1880;" corporate life, 99 years; capital stock, $2,000,000; route (about 21⁄2 miles) as follows:

Commencing at or near Washington square, New York City, and terminating at the Fourth Avenue Improvement of said city.

Maps. June 29, 1880, the Company filed in the office of the register of New York County

A map of its route from between Third and Fourth streets on Wooster street northerly to and under Union square and to and under Fourth avenue to at or near 61st street.

Stock. In the report of the Company to the Railroad Commission for 1885 it was stated that $2,500 of stock had been subscribed.

Construction. No record of any construction. The Company has probably forfeited its corporate existence.

509 The New York Tunnel Railway Company

(Manhattan)

Incorporation. March 26, 1881, General Railroad Law of 1850; and an act amendatory thereof passed June 25, 1880, entitled "an act to provide for excavating and tunneling and bridging for transportation purposes within villages and cities of this state;" corporate life, 99 years; capital stock, $2,000,000; route (about 21⁄2 miles) as follows:

Commencing at Washington square through and under Wooster street and University place in a northerly direction to 13th street, thence easterly by curve to and under 14th street, thence by curve through and under 14th street to a point under Fourth avenue, thence northerly through and under Fourth avenue to 42d street at the Fourth avenue improvement.

This certificate is substantially the same as the certificate filed by the New York Tunnel Railway Company (no. 508), except that the route is given more in detail. Undoubtedly this certificate is meant to amend the earlier certificate and not to incorporate another company. The directors are the same in both certificates.

Construction. No record of any construction. The Company has probably forfeited its corporate existence.

510 New York Underground Railway Company
(Manhattan)

Incorporation. September 6, 1880; as a reorganization of The New York City Central Underground Railway Company (no. 472), incorporated pursuant to chapter 230, laws of 1868, for purpose of building an underground tunnel railroad; corporate life, not stated; capital stock, $10,000,000; route (about 22 miles), from City Hall to Kingsbridge.

Suit to forfeit corporate existence. June 14, 1890, the attorneygeneral instituted a suit against this Company to vacate its
