PREFACE.

THE history of the Patriarchs, from Adam to Joseph, is found in the Book of Genesis. The same history, word for word, is given in this volume, but the genealogies and certain other passages which are not usually read either in schools or private families are here omitted.

The omissions are these: iv, 17, to v, 32—ix, 20, to x, 32-xi, 10 to 32-xv-xix, 4 to 11, and 30 to 38— xxii, 20 to 24-xxv, 1 to 6, and 12 to 19, and 22 to 26 -xxvi, 7 to 11-XXX, 14 to 16, and 37 to 42—xxxi, 4 to 16-xxxiv, 1 to 31-xxxvi, 1 to 43-xxxviii, 1 to 3o -xxxix, 8 to 18-xlvi, 8 to 25-xlix, 2 to 28.

The Creation-Adam and Eve--The Temptation and Fall-Cain and Abel.

GENESIS i. - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. 9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry. land appear: and it was so.
