ON HAPPINESS.

Where, O happiness! is thy abode ?
O! lead us to the pleasing road,
If thou on earth art really found,
Teach mortals thy celestial ground.
Dost thou in gay assemblies dwell?
Or art thou in the hermit's cell?
Dost thou delight in meadows green,
Or in the crowded city seen?

For while life's journey we pursue,
Our object is to follow you.
Hope and ambition lead the way,
But you, alas! fly fast away.
To reach you is our grand desire,
Your very shadow we admire ;
And often sacrifice our health,
To seek you in the road of wealth.
Convinced that riches must be good,
As multitudes have understood.
So over sea and land we roam,
Forsaking sober peace and home;
We travel far with wondrous patience,
To seek agreeable sensations.
While others, ardent, hope to find,
Your real presence in the mind;
And certainly it has great powers,
To give us many tranquil hours.
So books and literature engage
Our busy time from youth to age;
Yet after great exertions made,
We own the truth a sage had said *,

That "To ourselves, in every place consign'd,

Our own felicity we make or find."

For of pleasure on earth,
Small portion is given,

ON BRIGHTON.

In January, 1824, when the new Chain Pier was opened to the Public.

Our youthful belles, in days of old,
Were patient and discreet;
But now they are equestrians bold,
They gallop on the street!

No more fine needleworks we see,
These wise and steady arts,

The grand embroidered chairs or screens,
The pride of many hearts.

The modern belles now fly away

To Paris or to Rome,

They think it penance hard to stay
In health and peace at home.

Yet true domestic joys we know
Our grandmothers attain'd,
Who never thought of France or Rome,

If happiness was gained.

ZACHARY PEARCE,

BISHOP OF ROCHESTER.

THIS learned and pious bishop was the son of a distiller in Holborn, and born in 1690; he was educated at Westminster school, where he was early distinguished by talents and application. He was next sent to Trinity College, Cambridge, where, for five years, he wrote papers in the Spectator, and also in the Guardian, on Eloquence and Taste.

In 1716 he published an edition of "Cicero de Oratore," which he dedicated to the Lord Chief Justice Parker, who was his faithful friend, and recommended him to Dr. Bentley, the master of Trinity College, who made him one of his fellows. Soon after Mr. Pearce got the appointment of chaplain to Lord Parker, then Lord Chancellor, and was afterwards made Rector of Stapleford in Essex, and, in 1723, became Rector of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields. He was distinguished by great eloquence and ardour in the pulpit; he seemed animated by heart-felt piety. He was honoured with particular notice by Queen

Caroline, and also by King George the Second. Sir Isaac Newton, and the Lord Chancellor Hardwicke, sought the society and friendship of Dr. Pearce. He was never married;-he was devoted to study and literature.

Dr. Pearce was appointed Dean of Winchester in 1739; in 1748 he was made Bishop of Bangor; and in 1756, Bishop of Rochester and Dean of Westminster. But soon after he resolved to retire to private life, and to resign some of his appointments; contented with a very moderate competence, to enjoy literary repose. He was nearly seventy years of age, but in good health; and he lived to eighty-five years, and published many valuable books.

To enjoy retirement and contemplation had been to him supreme happiness; his learning and extensive abilities appeared in his writings, of which we shall here only mention a few, "The Miracles of Jesus Christ, confirmed and vindicated," and "A Commentary, with notes, on the four Evangelists, and The Acts of the Apostles," also " A New Translation of St. Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians, with Notes:" also " A Review of Milton," and several sermons.

His retirement from very considerable emoluments of the Church, was a singular instance of greater anxiety regarding future happiness than any present enjoyments. He had studied, with intense diligence, the gospel of Christ, by which all the advantages of this world seemed vain and
