Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was 12 years old when he was sent to work in a shoe polish factory because his father had been imprisoned for debt. One of his first successes as an author, Dickens soon followed "Oliver Twist" (1838) with such classics as "David Copperfield" (1849) and "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859).
